The 20 Best Films To Watch When You're Stoned
We’ve all been there, you’ve been smoking for a good while now, and you are pretty high, but in your sluggish and lethargic state, you just can’t be bothered to move/think, let alone choose what you should watch.
Well, fear no more, because I’ve put together the ultimate list of films to watch when you’re stoned to help you out with your decision. Whether it’s comedies, psychological thrillers, or science fiction, I’ve got all bases covered.
So kick back, relax and slowly make your way through these drug-centric flicks.
1. Good Burger
Starring the much-loved Kenan and Kel, from the Nickelodeon show of the same name, this ode to the fast-food world is one of those ‘it’s so bad it’s good’ films. Everything about it is a 90’s throwback and the nostalgia alone will keep you entertained. Be warned though, it’ll give you a serious case of the munchies- if you didn’t have it already.
At the other end of the film spectrum in comparison to Good Burger, is Inception, which is still a great movie to watch stoned, albeit for a completely different reason. It’s pretty much a mind f**k from start to finish, as Leonardo DiCaprio plays a thief who leads a team of people trying to plant an idea into a target’s consciousness. It features a lot of dream sequences that are surreal, whilst the ending is a true ‘WTF?’ moment.
3. Dude, Where’s My Car?
Young Ashton Kutcher pretty much embodied the stoner type, especially in this flick where, as I’m sure you’ve worked out, he can’t remember where he’s put his car. Him and Sean William Scott are hilariously stupid together, and the plot is equally ridiculous, but it’s a total laugh to watch when you’re stoned. The ‘and then?’ drive-thru scene will have you giggling like a little school girl.
4. Bill And Ted’s Excellent Adventure
A baby-faced Keanu Reeves and his buddy travel through time to assemble various historical figures for their high school history presentation. Encountering the likes of Napoleon, Socrates, Genghis Khan and Abraham Lincoln, the movie is a really entertaining watch, and even more so when you’re blazing up a doobie.
5. The Big Lebowski
A cult classic, The Big Lebowski is so wonderfully weird it makes the perfect stoner movie. Jeff Bridges’ ‘The Dude’ character is the true definition of a pothead, and has absolutely no clue what’s going on throughout the film. Trippy as balls, there are many memorably weird scenes, none more so than the dreamy, gutter ball sequence which is a total trip.
6. Dazed and Confused
‘Alright, alright, alright’- the now famous words of a young Matthew McConaughey starring in Dazed and Confused. This coming of age drama follows a group of teenagers in Texas on the last day of school in 1976. There are many funny moments including Ron Slater’s (Rory Cochrane) take on George and Martha Washington getting high: “Every day George would come home, she’d have a big fat bowl waiting for him, man. She was a hip hip hip lady.”
7. Up In Smoke/Cheech and Chong’s Next Movie/Nice Dreams
There’s a trilogy of movies from comedy duo Cheech and Chong who play two serious stoners who get into also sorts of misadventures and mix-ups whilst being really, really high. Most of the movies revolve around their pursuit of drugs or selling drugs, and if you’re that high, you could probably watch them all in one sitting. A scene from the first movie Up In Smoke features the fattest joint you’ve ever seen, and may be the funniest drug related sequence of any film I’ve seen.
8. Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas
This movie is a drug-infused haze from the outset, and if you aren’t on drugs at first, you’ll almost certainly want to be once you start watching it. It follows Raoul Duke (Johnny Depp) and his attorney Dr. Gonzo (Benicio del Toro) as they travel across Las Vegas in pursuit of the ‘American Dream.’ One particular scene where they are in a casino on LSD makes me really want to be in a casino on LSD.
For me, seeing Interstellar on the big screen was the best cinematic experience I’ve ever had. So if I came out of the screening in my (relatively) normal state and felt like I’d fallen down a black hole, imagine what it’s like watching it when you’re high. Awesome probably, and I’m willing to bet it’ll turn your brain to mush. The effects alone will blow you away, whilst the scientific accuracies and possibilities will make you and whoever you’re watching with question your whole life, stoned or otherwise.
10. How High
The archetypal stoner movie, How High features rappers Method Man and Redman who go to Harvard after using the ashes of a dead friend as fertiliser for weed, which when smoked turns them into geniuses. Running out of it doesn’t stop them though- when their stash is exhausted they dig up the body of dead president John Quincy Adams and smoke his bones.
11. Step Brothers
If in doubt, when you’re high, put a Will Ferrell film on and you’re pretty much guaranteed to be sat there pissing yourself. Step Brothers is definitely one of his better ones though, and the quotes that you can repeat over and over again make this the perfect movie to get high to. If you’re stoned, there’s no way you will make it through this film without killing yourself laughing. Heck, even if you aren’t, you’ll love it.
12. Enter The Void
Visually, Enter The Void, is absolutely stunning, and probably the most psychedelic film you could ever want to watch. It follows the story of Oscar, a young American drug dealer in the neon-nightclub environments of Tokyo, who is shot by police, but continues to watch subsequent events during an out-of-body experience. The theme of hallucinations is prevalent throughout, particularly due to the main characters’ use of DMT, making this a super trippy viewing experience.
13. This Is The End
Another movie that’s so ridiculous it makes for an even better film to watch stoned, This Is The End features real-life stoner buddies Seth Rogen, James Franco and Jonah Hill, amongst many others, playing fictionalised versions of themselves as they face the aftermath of a global apocalypse. There’s a whole load of celebrity cameos, usually ending with their deaths, and one particular moment involving Jonah Hill and a one-night stand with a demon proves just how brilliantly far-fetched the movie is.
14. Half Baked
Another film with a plethora of famous faces, this movies follows Thurgood (the hilarious Dave Chappelle) and his friends Brian (Jim Breuer) and Scarface (Guillermo Diaz) as they try to bail their friend Kenny (Harland Williams) out of jail. Not having enough cash, the friends steal medical marijuana from the lab where Thurgood works and start their own business, called ‘Mr. Nice Guy.’ Dave Chappelle’s reaction to being offered free medicinal marijuana is exactly how all of us would react.
15. Jay And Silent Bob Strike Back
These two slackers may be the laziest stoners ever, but that doesn’t stop them from having a true pothead adventure. The pair are on a mission to get the money rightfully owed to them for the making of a “Bluntman and Chronic” movie- two characters inspired by them. Their convenience store rap is pretty freaking gnarly.
16. Donnie Darko
Not exactly one of the films in this list that comes under the category ‘comedy’, this cult classic is pretty disturbing, which makes it a great watch when you’re stoned. You’ll probably struggle to work out what’s going in if you’re high, but it follows Jake Gyllenhaal’s character as he’s haunted by visions of a frightening grey rabbit warning him of the end of the world. Whoever wrote this film was probably on drugs at the time so it’s only fair to watch it on drugs too.
In the mid 90s, it’d be hard to think of a funnier duo than Ice Cube and Chris Tucker to play two weed smokers who have 16 hours to come up with $200 that they owe their weed dealer. Smokey (Tucker) makes the mistake of getting high off his own supply, resulting in a whole host of problems for the two, and an entertaining watch for the rest of us.
18. The Matrix
The second and third Matrix films were to me, a bit of a disappointment, given how incredible the first one was and how much I loved it at the time. Another one that will make you think, rather than laugh, the film is pretty complicated but in a nutshell it depicts a dystopian future in which reality perceived by most is actually a simulated reality called “the Matrix”. Keanu Reeves’ character Neo, is one of the few people who learns the truth, but really it’s the martial arts, fight scenes, ‘bullet time’, and gravity defying action that makes it a joy to watch whilst you’re baked. Just don’t go trying any of it.
19. Pineapple Express
Starring certified stoners Seth Rogen and James Franco as a weed smoker and dealer, the two become accidental witnesses to a murder at the home of a drug lord. Add in a bad cop who’s after the two, and you’ve got a pretty decent action-comedy flick. The title of the film comes from the rare strain of marijuana known as “Pineapple Express,” that James Franco’s character smokes. He explains it’s so special “it’s almost a shame to smoke it…it’s like killing a unicorn.”
20. Harold And Kumar Go To White Castle/ Escape From Guantanamo Bay
You didn’t really think I’d leave Harold and Kumar out of a list of the best stoner movies did you? That, of course, would be blasphemous, and it’s really their first two films, despite there being a third, that are the best, and probably the ultimate stoner movies. The first follows the friends as they go in search of the White Castle Burger stoned out of their minds, encountering all sorts of mayhem and one Neil Patrick Harris. The second instalment finds the two detained as terrorists and sent to Guantanamo Bay when their bong is mistaken for a bomb on a flight to Amsterdam. They really are the perfect films to watch when you are flying high.
